  • Le Tour du Monde en 80 jours discusses about two different issues, modernity and traditionality. A bet for 80 traveling around the world is using the science and technology development. Theory from Anthony Giddens about modernity is used to analyze this study since it relates to modernity and traditionality. This novel tells about modernity in industrial revolution occurring in that time. Industrial revolution brought changes in many aspects. For instance, various machines developed and revolution in communication and transportation occurring. Those are the impacts of industrial revolution. However, there are several people keeping their own tradition and refusing those changes. They still live with their own way to keep the tradition. Some of them live against modernity. Negotiation is believed as the only way to solve this problem. Tradition will not disappear while modernity is developed in this world, but the tradition will change its form according to the era. Government takes role in keeping tradition, respecting culture, yet they also have right to forbid something bad in tradition.
