  • Background: Chlorine is a volatile substance with strong smell which proven to have an effect on respiratory organâs function. But, the research of its effect on olfaction organ is still inadequate. Objective:This research was done in order to prove the relation of chlorine exposure to olfactory dysfunction in the textile industryâs workers. Method:In this research, six volatile substances were used in the olfactory function test (camphora, carbon disulfide, vanili, oleum menthol piperate, eter, and capsaicin). Eighty subjects whom are workers of a textile factory, were involved in this research. The olfaction ability was considered as normal if the subject could smell the whole 6 substances in the test. The results were analyzed, using the Chi-square test. Result:It was found that 10(25%) of the workers in the group with chlorine exposure exceeding the limit, were having an olfactory dysfunction. Meanwhile, in group with undetected level of chlorine, there were only 2(5%) of the workers with olfactory dysfunction. The prevalence ratio was 5 with CI 95%(1,289-31,115), and the p-value= 0,012. Conclusion:Exposure to chlorine gas beyond the threshold value was proven to increase the event of olfactory dysfunction in factory workers.
