  • The rapid population growth in recent years has resulted in increased demand for electrical energy supply. In order to meet the needs of the electrical energy at low costs it is necessary to find alternative ways to generate electricity, one of them is using renewable energy source such as wind. Wind turbine generation system has been widely established in many developed countries. Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) is a system that used widely in the wind power industry. The main advantage of the DFIG when used in wind turbines is possibility to maintain the frequency of the output voltage at a constant value, regardless of the variation of wind speed at the generatorâs wind turbine. Because of that, the DFIG can be directly connected to the AC power grid and remain synchronized at all times with the AC power network. Simulations using PSIM 9.0 conducted on wound rotor induction motor that functioned as a DFIG to observe its characteristics. This motor is operated as a DFIG with giving input AC voltage to the rotor through slip rings. The rotorâs input serves to supply the frequency and the excitation of DFIG. Simulation results show that the wound rotor induction motor can operate as a reliable DFIG. That needs to be noted is the magnitude of the input current of the rotor at low frequencies condition.
