- Background: Liver is one of the most important organs to maintain homeostasis. Liver diseases often have no specific symptoms on the early stage. Therefore, liver diseases are usually too late to be detected. The most common cause of liver disease is consumption of alcohol. On the previous research conducted, mangosteen peel (Garcinia mangostana L.) has proven to have antioxidant component. Hence, the purpose of this research is to test the hepatoprotective ability of mangosteen peel ethanol extract to prevent liver damage. Method: Six groups of mice had been given intervention and bilirubin had been observed. Group 1, as the normal control group, had not been given any intervention. Group 2, as the negative control group, had been given CCl4. Group 3, as the positive control group, had been given CCl4 and silimarin. Group 4, 5 and 6, as the experiment group, had been given CCl4 and varying dose of mangosteen peel extract. Results: There were no significant changes in serum total bilirubin to all groups, except group 1. Statistic test on direct bilirubin serum also does not found any significant changes on all groups. Conclusion: There were no changes in serum total bilirubin in group (-), (+), 3, 4, and 5, and in serum direct bilirubin in all groups. However, the use of mangosteen peel ethanol extract to prevent liver damage should be considered.
