  • Preparation of nickel catalyst supported on coconut shell activated carbon (Ni/AC) for n-pentanol dehydration converted to its ether has been performed. Activated carbon was prepared by grinding coconut shell carbon and sieved at 60- 80 mesh, then it was calcinated at 800 °C, washed by aseton, NH â Cl and HCl, impregnated with NiCl Results of analyses showed that soaking into NH â Cl and 1 M HCl, content of Ca, K, and Fe metals in activated carbon decreased significantly. Results of ammonia adsorption showed that acidity of activated carbon and Ni/AC catalysts were 2,956 and 5,151 mmol/g, respectively. The highest catalytic activity was shown by 10 gram Ni/AC catalyst at temperature 450 °C, where the result of conversion of n-pentanol into 1,1-dipentoksi pentane was 74,49 % and dipenthyl ether was 0,21%. 2, and reduced at 400 °C using hydrogen gas at flow rate of 20 mL/minute. Contents of Ca, K, and Fe in the carbon were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). Acidity of the activated carbon and catalyst was determined using ammonia adsorption. Dehydration process of npentanol using Ni/AC catalyst was carried out in an electric furnace at temperature variation of 200, 250, 300, 350, 400, and 450 °C, and variation of the amount of catalyst of 6, 8, 10 gram, 40 mL n-pentanol, using N â at flow rate 20 mL/minute as a carrier gas. Results of the dehydration were analized by IR, GC, and GC-MS methods.
