  • Numerous studies about soft tissue profile changes have been reported. But the effect of orthodontic treatment on the lower third of the face with Begg technique has only limited documentation. Changes of the lower third of the face affect the soft tissue drape namely the lips, the nasolabial angle and the mentolabial angle. This study examines the correlation of maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth retraction with the changes of bimaxillary protrusion nasolabial angle and mentolabial angle using Begg technique. The study was conducted on 17 lateral cephalograms of class I Angle with bimaxillary protrusion, subject aged 18-30 years and treated with Begg technique until the end of treatment. Each cephalograms had measured on the anterior tooth retraction, measured as the horizontal distance from the upper and lower incisal tip to Vertical Reference Line (VRL), nasolabial angle measured as the angle between lower nose to upper lip (Cm-Sn-Ls), and mentolabial angle measured as the angle between lower lip to chin (Li-Si-Pg) at pre and post treatment. The result of this study have showed significant changes on nasolabial angle and mentolabial angle following retraction of maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth (p<0,05). Significant positive correlation was found between changes of the maxillary and mandibular incisors with the changes in both nasolabial angle ( r = 0,887 , P = 0,000) and mentolabial angle ( r = 0,693 , P = 0,002). By using stepwise regression, a ratio of upper incisor retraction to nasolabial angle was found 1 : 2,98 and lower incisor retraction to mentolabial angle was 1 : 2,343. The conclusion of this study was that upper and lower incisors retraction caused increased nasolabial and mentolabial angles after orthodontic treatment of bimaxillary protrusion treated with Begg technique.
