- Health problem in elderly people is typical, as an effect of interaction between aging process and disease complexity. Age-related changes in physiology will affect many processes involved in drug therapy. According to SKRT 1995, COPD is the fifth leading cause of death in Indonesia. It is estimated there were 4,8 million people with COPD with 5,6% prevalence. The aim of the study was to identify Drug Related Problems (DRPs) in geriatric hospitalized patients with COPD in RS Dr. Sardjito Yogyakarta during 2007. The study was a descriptive research, with retrospective design to collect data of the patient�s medical record. Samples were taken by purposive sampling method, where there were 34 patients who met the criteria. The data were analyzed descriptively to DRPs include unnecessary drug therapy, untreated indication, wrong drug, underdose, overdose, and drug interactions based on literature. The result concluded with percentage of each type DRPs. Result of the study showed that DRPs occurred in 27 patients (67,5%) from 40 patients, totally 56 cases. Total of indication-related DRPs were 19 cases (33,93%) include unnecessary drug therapy 16 cases (28,57%) and need for additional drug therapy 3 cases (5,36%). Total of effectiveness-related DRPs were 16 cases (28,57%) include wrong drug 9 cases (16,07%) and underdose 7 cases (12,5%). Total of safety-related DRPs were 21 cases (36,5%) include overdose 10 cases (17,86%) and drug interaction 11 cases (19,64%).
