  • ESBWR spent fuel storage pool still needs electric power to drive the pumps for cooling system. Pump works to circulate water in the pool through the heat exchanger to cool the spent fuel so that the temperature of the water in the pool remains stable and spent fuel always in sub-critical conditions. The need of pump make the spent fuel storage prone to accident when electrical power is lost. One way to overcome this problem is to design the spent fuel storage pool with passive cooling system. With the passive cooling system, spent fuel pool would be able to circulate the pool water coolant continuously without requiring of the pump. Specification to design is based on ESBWR spent fuel pool model. The main purpose of this research is to design a heat exchanger that can passively cool the pool without the aid of a pump. The model design of heat exchanger has a parallel pipeline for the flow of hot fluid and cold fluid with counter flow circulation. The model of heat exchanger material specification is made from stainless steel with a 2 inch diameter Schedule number 40 and 27,500 lattice grid, with the air mass transfer rate of 0.05 kg / s . From the results of model simulation, the design of the spent fuel storage pool with passive cooling system is feasible to build. Heat exchanger geometry obtained from the simulation modeling is a heat exchanger with a height difference / overlap ( Hch ) 5.2 meters, chimney ( Lur ) 10.73 meters , and covering a surface area of 25.16 square meters.
