  • uenee Ostrinia furnacalis G (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is an important polyphagus pest. Many studies to develop pest control techniques require a lot of insects. Therefore, a simple, cheap, and suitable rearing technique of O. furnacalis is an urgent need. This research aimed to determine whether the existing artificial diet is suitable for mass rearing of O. furnacalis. The criteria used to justify the quality of diet and mass rearing procedure were based on the life cycle and fitness of O. furnacalis as well as the cost. The experiment was consisted of two treatments: artificial diet and the cob as the control. Each diet was tested into two rearing methods: individual (2 gr/larva in each vial) and group (16 larvae/jar). The data was analyzed using independent t-test by R-analysis software. The results showed that life cycle and fitness of O. furnacalis reared with artificial diet at 21°C-30°C and RH 42,5%-76% was as good as those fed with the cob and the cost to produce an adult of O. furnacalis using artificial diet was cheaper than that of the cob. Therefore, the existing artificial diet and rearing procedure were considered suitable and qualified for O. furnacalis.
