- Islamic boarding school is the oldest kind of islamic education institution in Indonesia that still presence until this day. In its development, islamic boarding school is able to regulate and control it surrounding settlements into an integrated district. This suggests that there is a concept of compact in islamic boarding school. There are many islamic boarding school in Kabupaten Jombang, that it gains a name as �Kota Santri� or �Islamic Student City�. This research took 3 locations of islamic boarding school in Jombang which are Bahrul Ulum, Tebuireng, and Darul Ulum. The aim of this research is to measure the level of compactness of islamic boarding school in Kabupaten Jombang and then find the factors that influence it. This research uses a quantitative � qualitative - deductive approach. At first it will measure the level of compactness of each islamic boarding school. The measurement uses 5 attributes of a compact that extracted from several of theories. And then 5 compact attributes would be derived to 22 operational variables by using descriptive statistics. After level of compactness were measured, qualitative analysis will performed. Based on the results of research, it revealed that the islamic boarding school district intentionally apply the principles of compact however it apply in a different terms, namely the district independence. The highest level of compactness is in Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School, with 70.49 % level of compactness. The second is Darul Ulum Islamic Boarding School with 66.87 % level of compactness. The third is Bahrul Ulum Islamic Boarding School, with 62.61 % level of compactness. Thus, each islamic boarding school has different level of compactness typology. It is influenced by the factor is based on the measurement results which are internal factors and external factors.
