  • Audience is, and will always be, an important part of any performance, including puppet show. The presence of the audience allows players to communicate and to deliver their messages. This paper intends to find a pattern of communication between players and the audience in a puppet show. Through a case study in the show entitled Men of the Sea: Finding Lunang by Papermoon Puppet Theatre, I will answer two questions: (1) what are the elements that support the process of message delivery to the audience and how do they work? (2) How is the process of creating a space in the performance in which the players and the audience can communicate? My research was conducted in Yogyakarta. The location was at Papermoon Puppet Theaterâs house during June and July 2013. In this period Papermoon Puppet Theatre was running the production process. Furthermore, from July 19 to July 20 2013 I visited Taman Budaya Yogyakarta for ArtJog13 event, in which Finding Lunang was performed in front of the audience for two days. The information needed for my research was collected using qualitative methods that produce a descriptive writing. Communication process that occurs on stage is different from direct communication. Players have control in the production of meanings. But, the audience has complete control in the process of interpreting. In this way, the process of interpreting the performance is influenced and affected by their knowledge and experience backgrounds. The lesser amount of media used by players mean that there is bigger space for audiences to interpret. In this show, Papermoon Puppet Theatre gives enough interpretation space for audiences to give feedback, which indicates a communication process that occurs when the show takes place.
