  • Background: obesity prevalence comes higer year to year. TV viewing as one of sedentary activity was stated as a risk factor of obesity in children. Objectives: to analize the risk of TV viewing duration to obesity in school aged children in Yogyakarta City dan Bantul Distric, and whether parentâ��s regulation has an influence on the childrenâ��s TV viewing duration and obesity risk reduction. Method: case-control study of obese and non-obese school children to study risk factors of tv viewing to obesity. Sampel of 244 of obese and 244 of non-obese elementary school children from grade 1 st â�� 5 th in Yogyakarta City and Bantul District 2013. Case were choosen using simple random sampling method and control were taken from the same grade and school with case without matching to age and gender. Obesity was defined for BMI/age â�¥ 95 percentile. Information of TV viewing pattern was collected using questionnaire and one week of 24 hours physical activities recall. Data was analyzed using chi square, t-test and logistic regression test. Result: TV set in childâ��s bedroom and eating habit while watching TV was not assossiated with obesity (p > 0,05). Children with duration of TV viewing â�¥ 2 hours/day were 3,29 times more likely to be obese than children who watch TV < 2 hours/day (95% CI, 2,22 â�� 4,83). Parents regulation was associated with the duration of childâ��s TV viewing but not decrease the risk of obesity. Conclusion: duration of TV viewing was the risk factor of obesity in elementary school children. There is a certain needs of appropriate parents regulation in restricting childrenâ��s TV viewing duration in order to reduce the risk of obesity.
