- This research discussed the classifications and functions of sarcastic expressions found in the movie �The Guard�. The classifications were propositional, lexical, like-prefixed, and illocutionary sarcasms. The goal of this research was to analyze the classifications and to find out the functions of sarcastic expression in the movie. The research methods used in this research were quantitative and qualitative methods. The data were seventeen sarcastic expressions taken from the movie subtitles. Six of them were propositional sarcasms and eleven of them were illocutionary sarcasms. From the analysis, there were three functions of sarcasm found: competitive, convivial, and collaborative. The result showed that a sarcastic expression was not just a simple meaning inversion, but also involved adequate context, intention from the speaker and response from the hearer.
