  • In an electrical power system having a voltage of less than 230 kV, the lightning surge is more dominant factor causing a transient over voltage more than the switching surge. Because of that, the knowledge of lightning strike effect occurring in 20 kV medium voltage distribution line is a very important thing so that the lightning strike effect can be anticipated to avoid the damage on the distribution line equipment. In this research, a lightning strike simulation has been done toward a 20 kV medium voltage distribution line of Yogyakartaâ��s Kentungan 2 feeder using ATP. The results show that a lightning strike occuring in one phase will create a transient over voltage which amplitude having the peak value of two times as much than the lightning peak voltageâ��s generated such as 35 kV lightning peak voltage creating 73.4 kV transients over voltage. In the other side, the magnitude of transient over voltage occuring in the other phases is 1%-76% smaller than the lightning peak voltage. Furthermore, the changes of peak voltage, front time, and tail time of the lightning impulse will affect the transient over voltage which is occurred.
