  • The aims of this research are to describe about the definitions of zoutou bunka as well as the relations between zoutou bunka and Japanese beliefs. Zoutou bunka is one of Japanese customs that allows them to exchange thing or money in some special occasions. The data of the research were collected by doing library research. This final thesis consists five chapters. The first chapter consists of themeâ��s background, purpose of thesis, theories, research method, etc. The second chapter consists of the description about the theories which used in this research. They are anthropology of religion, theory about zoutou, Japanese religions, and Japanese perspective in religion and beliefs. The third chapter describes the history, occasions, and the mechanism of zoutou bunka. The fourth chapter explains about the relationship between zoutou bunka and Japanese beliefs. The last chapter is the conclusions. The result of this research shows that zoutou bunka has three obligations which should be done by the agents and four elements which should be concerned about. Those obligations are gift-giving, gift-taking, and gift-repayment. Those elements are time, agents, things, and ways to give. They are relating to Shintoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Japanese folk-belief which are causing some rules. If the agents did not following those rules, they will get some social sanctions. It shows that Japanese very concerns about something which related to their beliefs.
