Daftar Isi:
- This research discusses the requests strategies uttered by the characters in the movie Flipped. The goal of this research was to identify the request utterances in the movie, to classify the directness level in making requests from the most direct to the least using the strategy types proposed by Blum-Kulka and Olshtain (1984), and to discuss the roles of the social distance and power on the directness level of the requests found in Flipped. The methods that were used in doing the analysis are quantitative and qualitative. There are 64 requests found in the movie. From the analysis, it is found that the direct level is used mostly in the movie (39), followed by conventionally indirect level (15) and non-conventionally indirect level (10) as the least directness level used by the characters. Related to the politeness, when a speaker possesses higher power than the hearer, he will tend to use direct requests when talking to someone familiar and indirect requests to a stranger in lower power. When the interlocutors possess equal power, they also tend to use direct requests. The direct requests are also used by speaker in lower power because they are very close to each other. The result shows that the social distance and the power influence each other in an interaction, and that an utterance which is supposed to be indirect may be change into direct by the existence of close social distance between the interlocutors.
