- Adsorption study of phosphate in freshwater using natural zeolite and alginate has been done. The research started by synthesizing Fe-zeolite-alginate by dropping the mixture of 1:1 composition Na-alginate and zeolite solution into 0.2 M Fe3+ solution. As a comparison, Fe-alginate beads was made by dropping Na-alginate solution into Fe3+ 0.2 M solution. Both of the beads was stored at wet condition. Adsorption experiment was carried out in various mass of adsorbent, pH variation, contact time, and concentration. Adsorption equilibriun was evaluated using Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich and Temkin isoterm models. It is found that the optimum mass of Fe-zeolite-alginate was 4 grams and for Fe-alginate was 3 grams in 25 ppm and 200 mL solution. Optimum pH adsorption for both beads was 3. Kinetics evaluation showed that at pH 11, both of beads fitted well with pseudo second order kinetics model, having reaction rate constant of 0.0228 g/mg.min for Fe-alginate and 0.0323 g/mg.min for Fe-zeolitalginate. Isoterm evaluation that showed that Fe-zeolite-alginate beads has bigger Langmuir constant (KL) than Fe-alginate. However, Fe-alginate has bigger maximum capacity (qm) than Fe-zeolite-alginate. According to Freundlich model, adsorption process was much easier in Fe-zeolite-alginate, but its capacity was smaller than Fe-alginate. It can concluded that the phosphate ion adsorption on both beads follows physical adsorption or physisorption.
