  • Background: Studying in college is a strategic choice to achieve the goal for those who declare themselves to learn through the formal channels. However, the reality faced by teachers and education providers in many ways short of expectations. Education strategy is essential in teaching and learning activities. Someone who has the motivation and learning strategies tends to devote all his ability to get the optimal learning results according to the expected goals. Objective: The general objective is to determine differences in student motivation and learning strategies at Faculty of Dentistry, Hasanuddin University in students with collaborative learning and problem based learning. And the special purpose is to find the students motivation and learning strategies in students with collaborative learning and problem based learning in Faculty of Dentistry Hasanuddin University. Methods: A quantitative research with observational analytic cross-sectional study design. Sampling the total population. Using a questionnaire instrument Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ). Descriptive analysis and inductive analysis to test the hypothesis using Mann-Whitney test. Results: Students class of 2007 and class of 2008 who we still active studying in the Faculty of Dentistry, Hasanuddin University enter into the sample consisted of 84 students of class 2007 and 79 students of class 2008. There we difference in all components of learning motivation with collaborative learning and problem based learning. There we significant differences in learning strategies collaborative larning and problem based learning except in the case of organization = 0,369 and anxiety 0.058. And the mean value of problem based learning education strategies we greater than collaborative learning education strategies. Conclusion: There we differences in the learning motivation and learning strategies in students of Faculty of Dentistry, University of Hasanuddin with collaborative learning and problem based learning, except in organization and anxiety component. And it appears that the learning motivation and learning strategies in problem based learning are greater than collaborative learning in students of Faculty of Dentistry, Hasanuddin University.
