- Background: The symptoms of depression in patients with heart failure is a serious problem. Previous studies have analyzed the relationship of depression and heart failure from different sides, but the measurement is not standardized, making it difficult to compare. Norepinephrine and serotonin play a role in the pathophysiology of depression, serotonin partially stored in platelets, mean platelet volume (MPV) indicates platelet activation. The purpose of this study was to determine the correlation between symptoms of depression with the MPV in patients with chronic heart failure. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in patients with chronic heart failure who were admitted to internal medicine wards and ICCU Hospital Dr. Sardjito. Symptoms of depression were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). MPV data taken from routine blood laboratory results. The data presented in the form of mean and standard deviations (mean±SD). The correlation between symptoms of depression with MPV were tested with Pearson's correlation, 95% confidence interval and p value of <0.05 was statistically significant. Results: The study followed 73 patients, 40 patients met the inclusion criteria comprised 55 % of men and 45 % women with a mean age of 50.60 ± 13.48 years. The mean MPV 9.30±1.16 fL (7.30 to 11.90 fL), mean 9.38±0.93 fL in women larger than males 9.23±1.34 fL. Obtained a correlation of r=0.344 with p=0.030. The mean MPV major depression patients greater than 15.50±2.12 fL, and 10.00±2.64 fL on minor depression and 6.45±3.54 fL in milder depressive symptoms. This study is able to visualize the symptoms of depression in patients with CHF becomes more real and measurable by looking at the value of MPV. The results of routine blood tests especially MPV should receive attention in patients with chronic heart failure who are hospitalized. Conclusion: There is a positive correlation and statistically significant between the MPV depression symptoms in patients with chronic heart failure.
