  • Indonesian government through the National Nuclear Agency (Batan) has planned to build a nuclear power plants, with one interest area of site study of nuclear power plants in Teluk Inggris-Tanah Merah, Airputih Village, Muntok District, Bangka Barat Regency, Bangka Belitung Archipelago Province. Engineering geology condition is not yet known in detail. Therefore, some researches are necessary to do to know the engineering geology condition, especially the rock mass quality at this area in detail. Engineering geology investigations is carried out by assessing the rock mass quality and bearing capacity based on field observation and drilling data. The quality and bearing capacity analysis were done by using classification of Rock Mass Rating (RMR) (Bieniawski, 1989) and the Geological Strength Index (GSI) (Hoek, 1994). The Rock mass at the study area was divided into four (4 ) units , namely Units of Sandstone, Granite, Mudstone and Pebbly Sandstone. The RMR and GSI value in the study area is influenced by the parameters of discontinuity space density, the slope of discontinuity orientation, grade of weathering and groundwater conditions. From all rock units, Granite Unit has the best quality which is showed by the average value of RMR is 53 and GSI value is 66 with in 862.5 Ha large area. Based on RMR value of Granite Unit can be estimated the range of cohesion values is between 0.2 - 0.3 MPa , the friction angle is between 25o - 35o, and the allowable bearing pressure is between 280 - 135 T/m2. Based on GSI value of Granite Unit can be estimated the uniaxial compressive strength value is 1.0465 - 183.8 MPa, tensile strength is between -0.0122 - -5.2625 MPa, the rock mass strength value is 24.5244 - 220.351 MPa, and modulus of deformation with a range 1.73 - 86.68 GPa. Based on the RMR and GSI value and bearing capacity of the rock mass, the most appropriate location for the nuclear power plants site is Granite Unit, where an area of approximately 393 Ha is the best location for the shallow foundation of nuclear power plants with raft foundation type.
