- Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play an important role in the development of social economy. Competition in the market and the large number of SMEs that recently emerged both from within and outside the country, push many SMEs actors think hard to find a new strategy to win the competition. One way is to take advantage of developments in computer technology and communication technology to get more and more information in order to get a wider range of markets. So it can not be denied that the presence of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) become one of the SMEs access to develop their business. This study aims to look at how the variations of usage of ICT by SMEs, with respondents come from the perpetrators of SMEs in Yogyakarta. Data were collected through in-depth interviews to the respondents. In-depth interview and observation were directed to get information about the use of ICT in their business and then processed using the method of Grounded Theory. Then the results compared with previous study and the other respondents. Logical conclusion resulting from this study is that there are three factors that influence variation in the use of ICT that depicted a paradigm model. The first factor is the purpose of use of ICT is a causal condition. Second factor is the Knowledge of ICT as a condition that influenced the ICT Strategy Used as a third factor. Those three factors then translated into categorization to path the conditions, where here the writer get the conclusion that the success key factor of SMEs is the one who use ICT. Linkages between factors that affect the variation usage of ICT by SMEs form a categorization that can be used as consideration to support the business activities of SMEs.The suggestion of this research is, leveled study is needed to increase ICT knowledge of SMEs owner.
