Daftar Isi:
- Library as a cultural product constitutes a dynamic arena in which various different actors are on the encounters. This phenomenon becomes an interesting object to research in order to understand power constellations and relations amongst library actors. That the process shows their social practice and interaction demonstrates highly contested power for ideologies in the management of Islamic university libraries in Yogyakarta. In relation to the practice and interaction amongst those actors, this research tries to find out the power representation amongst them at the library management as well as to investigate those ideologies involved in the contest and finally to show how these ideologies are contested in the library management. In doing so, the researcher employs the concepts of power by Michel Foucault, trio-concept (Habitus, Field, and Capital) by Pierre Bourdieu, and some other related theories such as ideology by Louis Althusser and culture by Raymond Williams as a conceptual framework to analyse discursive practices of those libraries. This analysis was based on a constructionist-phenomenological approach using a cultural studies paradigm through a case study at three Islamic university libraries in Yogyakarta (libraries of UIN (Universitas Islam Negeri) Sunan Kalijaga, UII (Universitas Islam Indonesia), and UMY (Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta)). As a qualitative approach, depth interview with 15 informants has become a main technique for data collection accompanied with direct observation and documentation techniques as a way to clarify primary data in research. All data collected were analysed, in a critical interpretive way, through Miles and Huberman technique of analysis by three steps: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion or verification. In addition, secondary data collection technique of questionnaire (Scale-Four of Likert) given to 65 respondents was used as a way to verify obscure data and find a clear conclusion. Through the above theoretical and methodological approach, the researcher concludes that the library discursive practices demonstrate unbalanced power representation which takes place amongst library actors, both internally and externally. This imbalance influences the professionalism of the management of Islamic university libraries in Yogyakarta. In such situation, various groups and ideologies represented in the library management, such as religious thoughts, organisation lines, and gender issues, have played their roles to achieve their domination and hegemony. Such processes lead those libraries to serve as an ideological site which can be seen in several issues such as ideological types and preserved cultures in the libraries. In addition, contestation amongst actors as seen in the field is embodied in various forms of struggle such as librarian versus nonlibrarian and those from both internal and external which all demonstrate their games to achieve power.
