- Settlement problems faced by large cities in Indonesia increasingly complex . High birth rate and population migration constrained by the fact that the limited land in urban areas, the increasing value of land and the majority of the population of low economic level , causing dense settlements in the region is considered to be a strategic area of the downtown , industries and universities . To examine the settlement issue , we conducted this research with a case study along the banks of the Kapuas River in the city of Pontianak . Developments that visible from the river banks are settlements in the along this river banks . Kapuas river is very beneficial for the people around it , because this river be one of the most land livelihood needs . So that most of the people build residential buildings along this river to facilitate them in earn a living . Actually, with the development of this settlement have an impact untidiness and degradation of the environment that can interfere with the city . From year to year the number of slums on the banks of the Kapuas River are increasing in number . Lack of government's contribution to manage the people in the settlement , economic factors and public indifference to the environment that they live in, are the major factors in the development of slums in Banjar Serasan Village. Researchers conduct a deductive approach with a qualitative method to be easier in support of this research . This method is based on the selection because the deductive approach is doing research with survey methods or observation survey in the field and see the reality and the facts that happened, and then studied thoroughly with the appropriate and related theories. With this research, is expected can find the analysis and conclusions to provide solutions on issues of existing settlements along the banks of the Kapuas River . This is done to the better live of the resident of Pontianak city especially those who are living on the banks of the Kapuas river.
