  • This methanol plant was designed with a capacity of 525.000 tons per year. Methanol is produced using coal as raw material and planned to operate continuously for 330 days a year. The factory will be completely built in 2017. The product will be 99,9%w pure methanol. By evaluating the process condition, raw material and the product itself, this plant is comparatively considered as a medium risk plant. The overall process production of methanol from coal is divided into 3 main process, which are coal gasification to produce synthesis gasses, methanol conversion in methanol reactor and methanol purification process using distillation method. The operation of gasification process will take place in moving bed gasifier, a commercial model of lurgi gasifier, below 20 bar and 400áμ�C process condition. The methanol conversion/reaction will be on multitubular catalytic reactor using commercial MK-121 Topsoe catalyst (consist of Cu/Zn) in the operation of 225áμ� C and 55 bar. The plant is planned to be established in the area of Bontang, East Kalimantan on the land area of 12 hectare including the mess for employees and plans of regional expansion process, in Bontang, East Kalimantan is plotted as the area location of this plant because of its strategic location and its transportation access through Makassar strait. The raw materials are 85.000 kg/hr sub-bituminous coal, 23.418 kg/hr 98%w pure oxygen and 91.800 kg/hr steam. To support the process production, utility system also included inside the production zone, which provides 16.609 kg/hr steam (21 bar, 350áμ�C ), 3.420.421 kg/hr cooling water as cooling medium and 393.650 kg/hr BFW (21 bar, 110áμ�C) to be in processâ��s heat exchanger, as reactorâ��s cooling medium and as gasifierâ��s feed. Utility system also provided 4.558,57 KW of electricity, 100 m3/hr of compressed air for pneumatic needed and 23.418 kg/hr 98%w pure oxygen from air separation unit. Based on the criteria, the plant is considered high risk. The total fix capital cost will be US$ 147.834.973,77 + Rp 284.450.145.777,68 and the working capital will be US$ 62.901.727,11+ Rp 14.536.678.494,80. The calculated profit before tax is Rp 718.921.126.663,07 and calculated profit after tax is Rp 359.460.563.331,54. The Return on Investment (ROI) before tax is 42,28%, and 21,14% after tax. Pay Out Time (POT) before tax 1,91 years, and 3,21 years after tax. The Break Even Point is 42,13 %, Shut Down Point is 17,23 % and Discounted Cash Flow Rate Of Return is 24,44 %. Judging from the result of the economic analysis, the methanol plant from coal with capacity of 525.000 ton/year is interesting to be study further.
