- Papaya leaves contain a chemical that serves as a drug that helps the process of wound healing such as flavonoids, saponins, papain, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals. Macrophages are one of the important agents in the process of wound healing, especially in the inflammatory phase. This study aimed to determine the effect of papaya extract application to increase of macrophages in the wound healing process on gingival wistar rats. Research subjects consisted of 24 male wistar rats aged 2-2.5 months were divided into two groups: 12 rats of the control group and 12 rats treated group. Gingival injured rats using a punch biopsy on the buccal gingival incicivus mandibular teeth. Untreated control group after injury, while the treatment group was given papaya leaf extract 2 times a day on the wound. Each group was divided into two parts, which were decapitated on day 3 and day 5. Histological preparations stained with Haematoksilin eosin staining and then observed using a light microscope. This study uses data analysis two way ANOVA and LSD (Least Significant Difference). Calculation results of data analysis showed a significant difference between the control group and the treatment group were given the application of papaya leaf extract. The conclusion of this study is the papaya leaf extract can increase the number of macrophages in the wound healing process gingival wistar rats.
