  • The rapid urban expansion and development always pose a problem in environmental impact. This coupled with the destruction of the green open spaces in the city as a result of the high demand for land requirement. In Malang, public green spaces are realized in the form of parks, squares and street medians. Public green open spaces provided should be able to accommodate ecological, aesthetic, social and even economic functions. However, there are public green spaces that are not used by the society and do not fulfill their functions. This study aims to identify the typology of public green open space in Malang and assess the functions of green open space that could be contained by available public green space there. This study used qualitative deductive approach. Qualitative method was done using a list of questions to the interviews conducted with relevant agencies or park users. In addition, direct observation was also conducted to collect qualitative data. Data findings were then analyzed with descriptive verification methods. Thirteen indicators were verified with field data. Malang has a lot of public green space, i.e. 64 public green spaces. Viewed from the shape aspect, there are 44 public green spaces with a square shape and 20 public green spaces with line or elongated shape. V iewed from the usage aspect, there are 45 common open spaces and 19 linear open spaces. Viewed from the activity aspect, there are 38 active public green spaces in which human activates are present there and 26 passive public green spaces. Viewed from the physical aspect, there are 59 non-natural public green spaces and 5 natural public green spaces. Viewed from the form aspect, there are 12 public green spaces in agriculture and forestry category, 35 public green spaces categorized as green landscaping in the form of green line on the road, and 17 public green spaces are categorized as green landscaping in the form of the park. Then, as verified by determined indicators, there are 18 public green spaces which do not meet the green space function with an average of indicators met by 2 indicators. There are 35 public green spaces which are quite capable of fulfilling the functions of a public green space with an average of indicators met by 6 indicators.
