  • Gender development index was calculated in Indonesia in 1996, the calculation is carried out every three years. In 1996 and 1999 Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta ranked first national level, but in 2002-2010 dropped to second rank. The aim of the research are (1) determine the distribution and development of Gender Development Index by district/city in Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, and (2) determine the contribution of inter-indicator in the Gender Development Index each district/city in the Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. The data used in this research is secondart data. Gender Development Index and the kuantitative data obtained from the publications variable reports from Central Bureau of Statistic (BPS), and the kualitative data obtained from indepth interview. The method used is descriptive quantitative analysis, comparative analysis of spatial, and temporal comparative analysis. The conclusion of this research is, development of Gender Development Index in Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta always increase in 1999-2010. Yogyakarta is a capital city of Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, which has a value of Gender Development index and the highest indicator in Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta in 1999-2010. Indicators that contribute most to the achievement values Gender Development Index is an index of health, and lacks of contribute to the achievement values Gender Development Index is the index of economy.
