  • The average length of stay by foreign tourists in the Special Region of Yogyakarta has not changed much over time, but is relatively consistent in the range 1.9 days, attracting the researcherâs attention and curiosity to do this research. Length of stay or LOS is the duration tourists spend visiting a particular area. The longer tourists stay at a particular location, the more money they will spend in that place. Geographically, Yogyakarta is located between two main tourist destinations, which are Jakarta and Bali. Yogyakarta has its own unique characteristics which influence the length of stay by foreign tourists. The purpose of this research is to determine the factors that influence the length of stay of foreign tourists in Yogyakarta. The study was conducted with a focus on aspects of the tourist destinations, as well as the country of origin of the foreign tourists. Foreign tourists who visited Yogyakarta can be grouped into several big groups, which are tourists from countries in Europe, Japan, Malaysia and Singapore. Regional tourists from Malaysia and Singapore can access Yogyakarta directly from their country via direct flight, where as tourists from Europe and Japan can not do this but rather, they must to enter Indonesia via an international airport in another city before visiting Yogyakarta. The behavior and characteristics of the tourist groups are different, each with their own distinct characteristics. Data collection was done by making direct observations in the field, interviews with stakeholders and distribution of questionnaires. Questionnaire data was used to complement the primary data obtained from interviews and direct observation. The focus of this research was on the technical and operational aspects of the movement of tourists and did not discuss in depth about motivation and psychological condition of foreign tourists. Technical and operational aspects referred to how Yogyakarta is reached and visited by foreign tourists and international travelers. Furthermore, the accessibility factor was in line and also related to the development of tourism products as well as tourist destinations.
