  • A study on the release of curcumin using glutaraldehyde-crosslinked chitosan/carrageenan film had been conducted in order to determine the effectiveness of the film to release curcumin in pH 7 buffer solution. The composition of the film components that affected the release curcumin including chitosan, carrageenan, Tween 80 and Span 80 were studied. The effect of the concentration curcumin loaded in the film on the rate of the curcumin released was also studied . Film was prepared by mixing the 1% acetic acid solution of chitosan and the aqueous solution of carrageenan, then adding glutaraldehyde as crosslinking agent for chitosan. The products were characterized using FT-IR spectrophotometer. Study on the release of curcumin was accomplished by immersing film in a buffer solution for 6 hours. The concentration of curcumin were determined spectrophotometrically. Curcumin release kinetics was analyzed by Korsmeyer-Peppas equation. The result of this work showed that the optimum composition for the film were 10,2% chitosan, 61,2% carrageenan, 20,4% Tween 80 and 8,2% Span 80 which gave the optimum curcumin loading of 20,4 mg/g film. The constant of Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetics model for this film was found as 27,5 minute-0,1. The release of curcumin in the film reached maximum at 44,5% in 6 h.
