  • Majutsu which was published in 1919, is one of Akutagawa Ryuunosukeâs works. This short story use the first person point-of-view. The main character in this short story is I. He has a desire to learn magic from an Indian named Matiram Misla. To be able to learn the magic, he must throw away his greed. A month after I learned the magic skill, he showed his magic skills in front of his friends. However, because of the challenges of his friends, he figured out that he failed to throw away his greed. This study uses the theory of Roland Barthes's textual analysis to examine the meaning of many codes that contained in the short story. First, the short story is divided into leksia-leksia which are total of 61. Then each leksia will be scrutinized closely to find any code contained within it. Finally, the codes are analyzed to obtain their meaning. The results showed that many of the codes lead to India-Japan relations during this short story were created. The meaning suggests that Japan have a lot to learn from India in order to overcome the influence of modernization by many western countries.
