  • The prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) seems to increasing ten times in half century and the mean age at maternity and paternity has increased. Both genetic and non genetic factors are thought to play role in ASDs. Several previous studies have concluded associated between advance maternal and paternal age and the risk of ASDs in their children but not in all studies. This research was trying to find whether paternal age and maternal age at pregnancy associate with ASDs in their children. This was a case control study with 50 cases matched with 100 controls on age and sex. Samples were collected with consecutive sampling method. This study included children aged 18 month to 7 years old diagnosed with ASDs who visited pediatric growth and developmental outpatients clinic at Sanglah Hospital and personal correspondence from January 2013 until April 2013. After adjustment in multivariate analysis paternal age at mother pregnancy have significant association with ASDs with OR 6.3 (95% CI 2.0 to 19.3). Maternal age at pregnancy was not associated with ASDs. In multivariate analysis asphyxia and paternal smoking had significant association with ASDs in children with OR 10.3 (95% CI 1.9 to 56.5) and OR 3.2 (95% CI 1.5 to 6.9) respectively. We concluded paternal aged â¥40 years old at mother pregnancy has 6.3 times at risk to have children with ASDs. Paternal smoking has 3.2 times at risk to have children with ASDs and asphyxia has 10.3 times at risk to have children with ASDs.
