- Development of natural adhesives that does not depend on fossil resources is very important for the future of particleboard materials. We recently found that citric acid can be used as a natural adhesive for particleboard. In this study, we investigated the properties of physical mechanical and dry-wood termite resistance on bamboo particleboard with citric acid. Particle obtained from Dendrocalamus asper Backer was mixed with citric acid ranging from 0% to 40%, and the particle mixture was pressed at a temperature 200°C and 220°C. The press pressure and heating time were set at 2 MPa and 15 minutes, respectively. Water resistance increased with citric acid, and termite resistance were also clearly increased with citric acid content. The mechanical properties were affected by the citric acid content, and the particleboard fabricated at 30% citric acid showed excellent values. The average modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, and internal bonding at 30% was 14.95 MPa, 4.26 GPa, and 0.32 MPa, respectively. Based on the results of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, intensity of ester linkages between bamboo and citric acid were increased with citric acid content.
