- Brackets inside the mouth will cause friction with the oral mucosa. Constant frictions are capable of triggering changes in epithelial cell turn-over. The research objective was to determine the effect of brackets to buccal mucosal epithelial cell turn-over in mixed dentition patients (study on leveling stage 2 weeks). This is a quasi-experimental research. Subjects were children who came to RSGMP Prof. Soedomo Yogyakarta and Klinik Cahaya Mitra Surakarta, in March until June 2012 with the criteria are mixed dentition stage, class I Angle maloclussion, have a good oral higiene and diet. The total sample of 16 subjects, whom mucosal swabs taken on upper P1-P2 (exposed brackets) and the lower anterior (no exposed brackets) using a cytobrush. Mucosal smear in fixation using 95% alcohol and smear using Papaniculou, then counted the number of cells. Unpaired t test and Fisher Exact test was done to determine differences in buccal mucosal epithelial cell maturation in both group. The results showed that superficial cell in the area which contact with bracket is fewer than superficial cell in the area without contact with bracket, but no statistical difference in the percentage of superficial cells (p = 0.444) and intermediate cells (p = 0.447). Fisher Exact test showed no significant difference in superficial, intermediate, and parabasal cell dominance in the lower anterior buccal mucosa and buccal mucose the upper P1-P2 (p = 0.654). Friction between bracket and buccal mucose cause faster maturation, but because the subjects have good diet and oral higiene the maturation stays normal. The conclusions is brackets does not affect the turn-over of buccal mucose epithelial cells in mixed dentition patients at leveling stage.
