  • Objective : Comparing changes of tear secretion postphacoemulsification surgery between diabetic cataract patients and non-diabetic cataract patients. Methods : This study used a sample of 48 cataract patients (24 patients cataract with diabetic and 24 patients cataract non-diabetic). Assessment of tear secretion measured before surgery and 3 days after surgery with Schirmer test. Result : The changes of tear secretion postphacoemulsification surgery between diabetic cataract patients and non-diabetic cataract patients gives statistically significant results (p <0.001). Then, comparison of tear secretion pre-phacoemulsification surgery between diabetic cataract patients and nondiabetic cataract patients also results in statistically significant results (p <0.001). Conclusion: Diabetes mellitus and phacoemulsification led to a decrease in tear secretion. Tear secretion in diabetic cataract patients showed statistically significantly lower compared with non-diabetic cataract patients both pre-operative and post-operative.
