  • Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic syndrome characterized by an increase in blood glucose (hyperglycemia) and the secretion of glucosein the urine due to a shortage of insulin, or both effects work. The state of uncontrolled hyperglycemia in patients with diabetes can cause oxidative stress which can lead to complications. One form of complication is Diabetic Nephropathy. White sweet potato contains an acidyc glycoprotein that work by regulating blood sugar levels and insulin from the pancreas to initiate excretions. In the purple sweet potato contains flavonoids (anthocyanins) that works as an α- glucosidase inhibitor which plays a role in lowering glucose levels after a meal. Objective: The study was conducted to determine the effect of extract of white sweet potato and purple sweet potato on levels of plasma glucose and plasma creatinine levels in diabetic rats. Methodology: Subjects were 30 white Wistar rats 6-8 weeks of age weighing 100-200gr. Rats were made diabetic with streptozotocin induced. Subjects were divided into 5 groups: normal control rats, diabetic rats, diabetic rats with an extract of white sweet potato 800mg/kgBW/day, diabetic rats with an extract of purple sweet potato 100mg/kgBW/day and diabetic rats with an extract of white sweet potato and purple sweet potato 800 (400:400) mg/kgBW/day (combination). Rats were treated for 4 weeks. Glucose measurements performed at 0 weeks, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks treatment and creatinine levels at 0 weeks and 4 weeks of treatment. Results: Research shows in the group treated with white sweet potato, purple sweet potato, and combination potato there were reduced levels of glucose and creatinine levels significance (p<0.05). Glucose levels and creatinine levels between normal control group and the group gift combination potato showed no significant difference (p>0.05). Conclusion: Giving extract white sweet potato and purple sweet potato extract either singlyor or combination, can reduce levels of plasma glucose and plasma creatinine levels in diabetic rats.
