  • Background. Dengue fever is one of the major disease in tropical country, including Indonesia. This disease is caused by dengue virus, with one of its vector is female mosquito of Aedes aegypti. The main strategy to reduce incidence of dengue fever is interrupting the life cycle of its vector. Chemical larvicide such as Organophospat has been used to cut down the breeding of mosquito for a long time. Recently, chemical larvicide has been known inefective as its application may result in vector resistance and environmental polution. Therefore, it is important to explore for an alternative larvicide, for instance, Curcuma domestica Val.as botanical larvicide. Objective. To explore larvicidal activity of chloroform extract from the rhizome of turmeric against Aedes aegypti. To find out the class of active compound from chloroform extract from the rhizome of turmeric. Method. The test is performed by using a set amount of chloroform extract from the rhizome of turmeric against Aedes aegypti larva of III-IV instar, with variation in doses used, according to WHO guidelines (2005). The mortality of larva was counted after 24 hours exposure and the data was analised using probit analysis. Result. The LCââ for the chloroform extract of turmeric rhizome was 255 ppm, after 24 hours exposure. Chloroform extract of turmeric rhizome has active compound which is classed into terpenoid.
