  • Energy drinks containing caffeine, benzoate, aspartame, acesulfame, and cyclamate widely circulated and consumed by public, but there were no analytical methods are to determine the levels of caffeine, benzoate, aspartame, acesulfame, and cyclamate simultaneously using HPLC with UV-PDA detector. The aim of this study was to obtain HPLC-UV-PDA method which met the validation parameters namely selectivity, linearity, accuracy, precision, limit of detection as well as limit of quantitation, and robustness. Potassium acesulfame, sodium cyclamate, caffeine, sodium benzoate, and aspartame were detected at a wavelength of 225, 200, 272, 225, and 200 nm, respectively. The HPLC system consisted of Kromasil C18 (250 x 4,6 mm i.d., 10 Î1⁄4m particle size) at 40oC as a stationary phase, the mobile phase a mixtures of 25 mM phosphate buffer pH 4.3-methanol (80 : 20 v/v), with a flow rate of 1.5 mL/min. The method validation showed a good selectivity with resolution > 2,0 for all analytes. Linearity range were 4 - 24 mg/L for potassium acesulfame, caffeine, sodium benzoate, and aspartame, while 30 - 180 mg/L for sodium cyclamate, with correlation coefficien (r) > 0.999 for all analytes. Detection limit of potassium acesulfame, sodium cyclamate, caffeine, sodium benzoate, aspartame were 0.21
