  • Caprolactam is a raw material for nylon 6 manufacture. It is made from benzoic acid hydrogenation process at pressure of 20 atm and temperature of 190 °C. It uses a palladium catalyst with charcoal support. The product of Cyclohexane Carboxylic acid is reacted with nitrosylsulfuric acid to produce caprolactam, sulfuric, and carbon dioxide at 80°C and 1 atm then the process separation with neutralized of Ca(OH)2 to produce gypsum. This plant is designed to produce 50.000 tons/year of caprolactam. This plant will be established at Gresik, East Java with plantâ��s area of 160.000 m2. Raw material which used in this process was 7.344,94 kg/hour of benzoic acid, 400 kg/hour of hydrogen, and 8.260,14 kg/hour of nitrosylsulfuric acid. While the utility would need 53344,12 kg/hour of makeup water, 1163,21 kg/hour of steam, 26428,72 kg/hour of cooling water, 200 kg/hour of fuel oil, and 1728,20 kW of electricity. Based on economic evaluation, profit before tax is Rp 290.250.834.589,19 + US$ 38.362.666,02/year, and working capital of Rp 303.088.618.954,86. The plant would gain profit (before tax) of Rp 120.097.809.243,16/year with break even point (BEP) of 49,51%, POT (before tax) of 2,17 year, ROI (before tax) of 36,10% and Discounted Cash Flow Rate of Return (DCFRR) of 46,86%. Based on these data, it can be concluded that this Caprolactam plant with 50.000 tons/year production capacity is feasible to established.
