- Background: Infections due to the use of implants is a problem that often occurs. It can be influenced by biocompatibility, and surface topography of the implant. Manipulation of the implant surface and the coating with the antibacterial agent is required as a better approach. Cinnamon oil has been shown to have quite strong antibacterial capability compared to other oils. Implant coatings using cinnamon can be a good alternative in the treatment of infection related to the use of implants. Method: This is an experimental in vitro study using chitosan 2%, 3% and cinnamon 0.125%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 1%, 2% coated schanz screw. Then divided into bovine bone inserted and non-inserted groups. Schanz screw is exposed to S. epidermidis by using liquid dilution (TSB) and cultured on a Muller Hinton medium. Evaluation is done by assessing the level of turbidity and S.epidermidis growth in culture media then assessing material using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Result: Obtained gradual decrease in turbidity levels and the number of colonies correspond to the increase of cinnamon concentration and eliminate S. epidermidis at 2% concentration in both groups. There was no significant difference between both groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The insertion of cinnamon loaded chitosan coated schanz screws did not affect the effectiveness of inhibiting bacterial growth of S. epidermidis.
