  • A study on ethanol transport through chitosan/pectin polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) type composite membrane had been conducted. Chitosan/pectin PEC-type composite membrane prepared by ionic interactions between polycation of chitosan and polyanion of pectin to form PECs had been tested for its strength using Universal Testing Machine (UTM) and characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Ethanol transport study had been accomplished using two treatments, namely bacth system and continuous system. Concentration of ethanol in the source phase and receiving phase which sampled every two hours during 36 hours in the batch and continuous transport system were determined using ABBE refractometer. The results of this research showed that chitosan/pectin PEC-type composite membranes could transport ethanol at some variations of composition of chitosan and pectin. The greater concentration of ethanol in the source phase could increase ethanol transport rate. Longer time of transport could increase amount of transported ethanol toward receiving phase. Chitosan/pectin PEC-type composite membrane with weight ratio of 60:40 showed optimum transport results. It elucidated that greater pectin composition in chitosan/pectin PEC-type composite membrane could increase rate of ethanol transport. Chitosan/pectin PEC-type composite membrane could transport ethanol 11% (v/v) from source phase to receiving phase in the continuous system, and 46.8% (v/v) in the batch system.
