Daftar Isi:
- Dental caries is a disease that damages hard tissues of teeth due to plaque accumulation. Plaques formed by the accumulation of bacterial, one of which is the Streptococcus mitis bacterial. The aim of this study was to test the antibacterial ability of Phaleria macrocarpa's fruit extract toward the growth of the Streptococcus mitis bacterial. A number of 300 CFU/ml bacterial suspension was added with 1 ml of Phaleria macrocarpa's fruit extract which its concentration i.e. 20%, 22,5%, 25%, 27,5%, 30%, sterile distilled water as a negative control and chloramphenicol 2 mg/l as a positive control. The bacterial suspension and extract was poured into a petri dish and added with fifteen ml of a melted BHI agar in +45oC. Next, the petri dishes were incubated for 24 hours, with temperature of 37oC. The obtained data in this study was a number of Streptococcus mitis bacterial colony. The result of this analytic descriptive study showed inhibition ability of Phaleria macrocarpa's fruit extract to Streptococcus mitis bacterial growth. The number of Streptococcus mitis bacterial colony was gradually reduced as the Phaleria macrocarpa's fruit extract concentration increased. The highest number of Streptococcus mitis bacterial colony was sterile aquadest group, while the lowest one was 30% Phaleria macrocarpa's fruit extract. 30% Phaleria macrocarpa's fruit extract was MIC90 for Streptococcus mitis bacterial. The conclusion of this study is the Phaleria macrocarpa's fruit extract has an antibacterial ability on the growth of bacterial Streptococcus mitis.
