Daftar Isi:
  • Streptococcus sanguinis is one of pioneers bacteria that can form dental plaque and initiate dental caries. Existing antibacterials have several negative side effects, one of them is resistance of pathogenic bacteria. Indonesia is rich in herbal plants which have potential used as an antibiotic that is more effective and nontoxic. Previous studies showed that mahkota dewa fruit (Phaleria macrocarpa (Scheff.) Boerl) contains flavonoid, polyphenol, saponin, and alkaloid that has antimicrobial activity. The aim of this research was to determine the antibacterial effect of Phaleria macrocarpa fruit to inhibit the growth of S. sanguinis. This research used Phaleria macrocarpa fruit extract with stock concentration of 40%, 37,5%, 35%, 32,5%, and 30%. An ethanol extract of Phaleria macrocarpa was made by maceration method and antimicrobial activity against S. sanguinis was tested by pour plate method. Pour plate is a method used to determine the sensitivity of antibacterial agent indicated by the number of bacterial colony growth. The results of this descriptive analytical research showed that Phaleria macrocarpa fruit extract has an effect to inhibit the growth of S. sanguinis with the minimum inhibitory concentration in 30% and minimum bactericidal concentration in 32,5%.
