- Background: The increase of life expectancy in Indonesia affects the number of elderly population. In 2010, the elderly in Yogyakarta numbers as many as 29 thousand people or 12.48% of the total population. One of elderly�s health problem which is the problem of hydration is also increasing. The increasing of hydration problem is need a specific attention to solve. Currently, there is a wide variety of commercial isotonic drinks circulating in the market which can be obtained with ease and can be consumed by anyone. Despite the vast numbers of circulating isotonic drinks, only a few were in accordance with the standard. Penggalih, for 3 years, developed a basic isotonic drink from yellow kepok banana flour that has been tested to be capable of restoring the body's hydration status. The Isotonic Banana Drink testing was done on a group of young adults aged 18-20 years. Results shows that Banana Isotonic Drink is as capable as gold standard isotonic drinks in restoring hydration. To increase the utility scope of the Banana isotonic drink, it is necessary to test the utilization of rehydration in the elderly. This study is expected to provide health benefits in terms of improving the body's hydration in older adults. Objective: To determine the effect of Banana Isotonic Drink and Gold Standard for rehydration by viewing pooled moring urine profile. Methods: The study uses an experimental design of clinical trials with a crossover design. The study involves 18 elderly people who has met the criteria. Each subject was asked to consume two types of fluids as much as 1 liter per day for 3 x 24 hours. Assessment of hydration status is done by using morning urine profile indicator. Differences in hydration status were analyzed using the Independent Ttest. This analysis was performed using SPSS 17.0. Results: urine color, urine clarity, urine pH, and urine specific gravity did not differ significantly between treatment groups (P> 0:05). Conclusion: Isotonic Drink Banana and the gold standard have equal influence towards urine profile though not significantly. This means Isotonic Drink Banana is able to rehydrate the elderly body as well as the gold standard. In-depth analysis is needed on variables that may act as confounders such as type of food and beverages consumed in addition to product intervention. Improvement us required on the flavor and organoleptic to improve satisfaction and acceptance as a future plan for commercial production.
