  • Background: Hypertension is not only occur in adults but may also occur in adolescents. Increasing incidence of degenerative diseases including hypertension caused by diet and lifestyle in adolescents. Knowing the risk of hypertension sooner in adolescence is expected to reduce the incidence of hypertension in adults. Objective: To analyze the consumption of coffee, smoking behavior and sleep quality as risk factors for high blood pressure in adolescents in Yogyakarta City. Methods: The study was an observational study using case-control design with matching on age and sex. The research was conducted in August-November 2012. The study population was all junior high school students in selected schools in Yogyakarta. The samples were adolescents 12-15 years old on junior high school who meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria with sample size 40 people on cases and 40 people on controls. Data collections covers questionnaire of coffee consumption habits, smoking behavior and sleep quality questionnaire (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index). Statistical test by using the Chi- Square at 95% confidence level. Result: Consuming coffee â�¥ 6 times per week was a risk factor that increased blood pressure in adolescents in Yogyakarta City(p = 0.043) with OR 4.75 (95% CI: 0,94-23.99). Smoking behavior was not a risk factor that increased blood pressure in adolescents in Yogyakarta City (p = 1.000) with OR of 2.05 (95% CI: 0.18 to 23.59). Sleep Quality was not a risk factor that increased blood pressure in adolescents in Yogyakarta City (p = 0.799) with OR 1.14 (95% CI: 0.42 to 3.08). Conclusion: The habits of consuming coffee â�¥ 6 times per week was a risk factor that increased blood pressure in adolescents in Yogyakarta City. Smoking behavior and the sleep quality were not risk factors that increased blood pressure in adolescents in Yogyakarta City
