  • Lake is one of the water sources to fill the needs of the human society in karst area of Gunungkidul especially during dry season. Remote sensing data with multi temporal analysis was used to detect lake condition which have dynamic characteristic. ASTER image was expected to alter the disability of LANDSAT 7 ETM+. This research was aimed to (1) assess the ASTER multi temporal image for mapping lake distributions (2 )assess the most effective image transformations to detect lake distributions (3) analyze the lake distribution and the existence of settlement distribution in karst area of Gunungkidul Regency. Band Rationing, NDVI, and NDWI were used to analyze the most effective image transformation in order to detect lake distribution. Thematic accuracy method was utilized to assess the accuracy of lake distribution map. Land use extraction with maximum likelihood classification method was needed to breakdown the settlement information. Purposive sampling was the method to select samples. Confusion matrix was applied to assess land use map accuracy. Least cost path analysis provided to analyze the lake distribution and the existence of settlement distribution. The highest accuracy of lake distribution map based from NDWI transformation was (86,6%). The second was Band Rationing (85,7%) then NDVI (84,2%). Assessment accuracy from land use map resulted 85,71% with 0,83 of Kappa Index. Based on least cost path analysis, the lake have the distance with settlements within a radius of 3,2 km.
