  • Toxocara vitulorum is a large nematode that commonly infects cattle and buffalo calves. This worm can cause a disease called toxocariasis, one parasitic disease that causes diarrhea and poor growth in calves. Toxocariasis in an area will cause huge economic losses. The disease has never been reported in the district of Magelang. This study aims to determine the prevalence of Toxocara vitulorum in calves in the area and its associated factors. Stool samples were taken in Magelang District using multistage sampling method. A total of 133 stool samples were randomly and proportionally selected from 4 sub-districts and 9 villages. Samples were taken and then tested with the floating method to detect T. vitulorum eggs. The prevalence of the infection was determined by the proportion of the positive samples. The association between the infection and independent variables was calculated by means of Ï2, and its strength was calculated by odds ratio. Microscopic examination showed that 28 samples of 133 calf stool samples were positive for Toxocara vitulorum eggs, so the prevalence of Toxocara vitulorum infection in calves in Magelang District is 21,1 %. Based on the calculation of chisquare and odds ratio, infection of T. vitulorum in calves in Magelang District was associated with breeder education junior high school and high school (OR = 2,810), beef calf (OR = 1,591), calf ages below 3 months old (OR = 3,722), individual barn (OR = 24,545), barn floor of soil (OR = 22,272), no stool processing facility (OR = 4,878), after morning forage (OR = 2,84), and no sunlight (OR = 5,29).
