- One of dental problems in Indonesia is tooth loss due to of periodontal tissue damage. Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans is one of periodontal disease�s key pathogens. Periodontal disease can be treated by scaling using ultrasonic scaler. Clove bud�s essential oil (Syzygium aromaticum) is herbal products which has antibacterial potency. The goal of this study was to determine the concentration of clove bud�s essential oil in ultrasonic scaler coolant water to inhibit growth of A. actinomycetemcomitans. A. actinomycetemcomitans was inoculated in 5 ml Nacl 0,9% with concentration of 1,5x104 cfu/plate. Five milliliters clove bud�s essential oil in the concentration of 0,04%, 0,08%, 0,16%, 0,32%, 0,64%, negative control (PEG 5%), and positive control (chlorhexidine gluconat 0,0005%) were sprayed in each tubes by ultrasonic scaler. Two hundred micro litters were taken from each dilution to be inoculated in blood agar plate by spread plate method. Blood agar plate then incubated for 3x24 hours. Colonies� growth were counted directly from each plate. One way anova showed significant effect of concentration of clove essential oil�s inhibition of A. actinomycetemcomitans. LSD result showed significant differences between groups of negative control, clove bud essential oil in concentration of 0,04%, 0,08%, with clove bud essential oil in concentration of 0,64%. There was no significant difference between groups of 0,08%, 0,16%, 0,32%, 0,64% essential oil with positive control. The conclusion of this experiment was essential oil concentration of clove bud in ultrasonic scaler coolant water inhibit the growth of A. actinomycetemcomitans.
