- Whitening Toothpaste is common used by people because the ability to improve estetic but whitening toothpaste have high abrasive ability that posibly effect the filling material. Composite resin filling is often used by dentists for restoring the patient teeth well for anterior or posterior. The aim of this study was to research the effect of toothbrushing with whitening toothpaste and non whitening toothpaste on the surface roughness of nanohybrid composite resin. Fourteen human maxillary premolars were used for this experimental specimens, the cusp of the premolars were cut-off until the occlusal surface flat, as a cavity on the occlusal surface was prepared ( diameter 5mm, depth: 2 mm). The bonding agent was given to the cavity then applied by nanohybrid composite resin. The specimens were divided into two groups, the first group was brushed with whitening toothpaste and the second one was brushed with non-whitening Toothpaste. All specimens were initially immersed in artificial saliva for 48 hours before initial brushing. The surface roughness of the specimens before and after brushing were measured with surface roughness measurement instrument (Surfcom 120 a). The specimens were brushed twice a day in 2 minutes for 14 days. The data were analyzed by t-test with significance 95%. The average surface roughness of the Whitening and non Whitening group were 0,1857 ± 0,04276 and 0,3029 ± 0,09827. Analyzed with t-test, there is no significant effect of surface roughness of the composite between brushing with whitening and non whitening toothpaste. The conclusion from this study was that there was no significant difference of surface roughness of nanohybrid composite resin between brushing with whitening toothpaste and with non Whitening toothpaste.
