- Head and neck cancer radiotherapy may cause side effects on salivary glands. Accumulation of peripheral dose may cause atrophy and degeneration of acinar cells, therefore result in an impairment of secretion of salivary glands and may lead to decrease salivary flow rate. The purpose of this study is to know the effect of radiation doses to unstimulated salivary flow rate in head and neck cancer patients in Radiotherapy department of RSUP Dr. Sardjito Yogyakarta. This study used cross sectional method. Thirty subjects were selected by consecutive sampling method. The measurement of unstimulated salivary flow rate used spitting method. Saliva was collected and weighed with digital analytic scale. The radiation dose (Gray unit) obtained from medical records. The result of this study analyzed using Pearsons correlation and simple linear regression statistic test with 95% confidence interval. The result of this study showed a significant (p<0,05) medium negative correlation (r= -0,423) between the radiation dose with the decrease of unstimulated salivary flow rate in correlation and regression test. It can be concluded that the higher dose of radiation therapy, unstimulated salivary flow rate of patient with head and neck cancer decreased.
