- Background Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pleiotropic cytokine that is known to have a role in many physiological and pathophysiological functions. Some studies suggest that IL-6 is produced by tumor cells that function as a growth factor, it is also reported that colorectal cancers produce IL-6, resulting in increased IL-6 in the colonic mucosa is a sign of excessive cell growth. Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) is a glycosylated protein with a molecular mass of 180 kDa. Increased concentrations of serum CEA found in patients with several types of cancer, especially colorectal cancer. Increased levels of CEA in the blood associated with disease progression of patients with colorectal cancer. Objectives This study is being held to test the hypothesis that IL-6 expression in colorectal cancer tissue has a positive correlation with serum CEA levels in colorectal adenocarcinoma patients. Methods We performed a cross sectional study. Sampling was done by random sampling. The subject of this study is the resection preparation of colorectal tissue biopsies from all patients with adenocarcinoma colorectal with tissue samples are sent to the department of Pathology Anatomy Dr. Sardjito between January 2009 and May 2013 who meet the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Statistical analysis to look for correlations between tissue expression IL-6 in colorectal cancer tissues and serum CEA levels of patients with adenocarcinoma colorectal was assessed by Pearson correlation test or Spearman correlation test, if Pearson correlation tests terms are not met. Limitation of significance accepted when p<0.05.
